Rob Drapala: A second year medical student who has traveled to over 20 countries but will be embarking on his first ‘medically-related’ journey this summer in Ecuador.
I am excited to still have an open mind while searching for a career in medicine that fulfills the values of health, leadership, adventure, and relationships. Ideally, I will find a career that bridges my past experience as a climate-change entrepreneur with my medical training. For me, the most intriguing and encouraging aspect of this medical student elective in Ecuador is the program’s backbone being an ecosystem approach to health. If our generation is going to make any meaningful contribution to the future health of our people, we are going to also have to ensure the future health of our planet and living environment. As this program is in its infancy, this summer’s students have an incredible opportunity to fully explore the wide range of determinants of health that have the greatest influence in each community. This big-picture thinking that brings together community health with sustainable community development is what has me initially interested in this opportunity.
